This month’s review belongs to the newest selection on Bourbon Mash-Up shelf, 1792 Barrel Proof, Single Barrel Select by Crown Liquors. 1792 is a Sazerac Company brand distilled and aged at the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, and the Full Proof is an expression released once a year at 125 proof and non-chill filtered.
Full proof bourbons are known for their richness in flavor. It’s important to note that Full Proof is not exactly Barrel Proof. This bourbon is advertised as being bottled at the original 125 barrel entry proof, therefore for consistency some dilution is required to maintain the barrel entry proof.
I sat down with my neighbor to give this one a good and thorough tasting. I wanted to share the experience of trying a new bourbon during a great conversation.
The color of this bourbon is a very deep amber and very inviting. The color promises rich and robust flavors.
As far as the nose of this one, it certainly provides the caramel tones I was expecting along with the spiciness, but you have to work for it. The 125 proofing does make it fairly alcohol forward if you are nosing too close, but that is to be expected. If you back off a bit, those rich smells are present.
I loved the taste of this one. It’s actually very easy to drink and would catch up with you quickly because it is so easy to drink. It’s definitely rich in flavor, and is a great mixture of dark sugars, cinnamon, rye, and hinted with a deep fruit essence.
I have to be honest that I expect a bourbon at this proof to burn and was pleasantly surprised that this one is very balanced. I have had less proof bourbon burn much more than this one. This just reminds me that a good distillery knows how to provide the proper balance. This one drinks very smooth and feels great to the palate. This was a perfect after dinner conversation drink.
I’m giving this one and entire endorsement as a great purchase for $49.99. Any time to share a bourbon with your neighbor while you try a bourbon for the first time is time well spent.
Cheers, Y’all!
