The Old-Fashioned Way to Beat the Summer Heat
While we certainly believe the best way for bourbon to be enjoyed is in its purest form and served neat, this can be a rough way to try and cool off during the dog days of summer. With the current explosion of the bourbon culture hitting mainstream, one of the classic bourbon cocktails is being consumed in large numbers. For those who are new to bourbon, an Old-Fashioned might be the perfect cocktail to begin familiar with the spirit, and for those who consume it regularly, it is a great way to cool off while still consuming Kentucky’s greatest treasure.
The Old-Fashioned probably dates back into the 1800’s and was originally a morning elixir to cure morning headache’s. Certainly as time has passed, this “basic” cocktail which really isn’t all that basic has evolved but most recognized by having the same basic ingredients, whiskey, sugar, bitters, ice, and a citrus twist. While any whiskey will work, the whiskey you choose might be the key to creating your favorite version of this classic cocktail.
For our Old-Fashioned recipe, we like a good rye whiskey like Michter’s US 1 Rye because the spiciness of a rye is a good balance to the sweetness of the sugar and citrus. Mix 2 ounces of whiskey, one ounce of simple syrup, 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters, 2 dashes of Orange Bitters, an orange peel, 2 Luxardo cherries, served on ice.
With the heat of the summer upon us, we highly encourage you to serve up an Old-Fashioned to stay cool.
Cheers Y’all!
