Whiskey and Food pairings

One of the more common food choices that goes well with bourbon is Burgoo. The stew, that is very popular in Kentucky is a slow cooked thick multi-meat stew served in the bluegrass state. It most likely came from the French, specifically during the civil war with Morgan’s Raiders. Burgoo has been called the meat lover’s pizza of stews. Burgoo is usually prepared in large batches with the ultimate goal of feeding large amounts of people. Burgoo is prepared with any meat or vegetables one is able to get their hands on. When cooking Burgoo, it should be done low and slow and the end result will ultimately be a juicy meaty stew that confuses your senses upon each bite due to the variety of ingredients. With bourbon being from the south, it understandably pairs well with most southern dishes—especially dishes that feature fattier meats, such as bacon, ham, etc. It’s important to remember that when pairing any foods with bourbon, you don’t want to overpower the other. Based on this simple principle, nut pairs well with bourbon, because they each have equally rich flavors. Fruit also pairs well with bourbon. The sugars in certain fruits can sometimes create flavor changes in the bourbon, making for an all-new drinking experience. Other good pairings to bourbon are maple syrup, sweet potatoes, and chocolate. In general, anything with sweet, smoky, or slightly spicy flavors will most likely pair well with bourbon. Once you find your favorite flavor profiles, you can get creative and start making your own innovative food pairings to go with this classic southern drink.
